International Day of Persons with Disabilities (IDPWD) is on December 3. Every year, the United Nations and other organizations recognize and promote the rights and well-being of persons with disabilities. IDWPD also advocates for the full, equal, and effective inclusion of those with disabilities.
So, it’s an ideal opportunity to discuss how Supported Independent Living (SIL) can dramatically improve lives for people with disabilities. SIL offers a bridge to independence which empowers individuals to live life on their own terms. By focusing on personal choice, inclusivity, and skill-building, SIL enables individuals to thrive in their communities while receiving personalized support.
What is SIL?
Supported Independent Living is a customized approach to help individuals live independently while receiving the help they need to succeed. Offering a mix of support services, this aid includes help with a wide range of activities from private needs to public experiences. SIL is a holistic solution that addresses both personal and community needs.
Through SIL, individuals can:
- Live with dignity and autonomy by having choice and control over daily routines.
- Develop essential life skills through guidance and by building confidence and self-reliance.
- Enhance social connections through active participation in the community and building meaningful relationships.
- Use technology for greater independence, from adaptive devices to mobile applications.
Supported Independent Living encompasses a range of tailored services that work together. Here’s a closer look:
- Personal care assistance like dressing, bathing, and meal preparation, all done with respect to the individual’s preferences and needs.
- Life skills training on how to manage personal finances, perform household tasks, pursue hobbies, and other desired interests.
- Community access such as supporting social outings, providing transportation, and encouraging activity participation that fosters belonging and purpose.
- Technology aids which enhance autonomy like wearable alert devices and communication apps.
About one in five of the global population – an estimated 1.3 billion people – experience a significant disability. Individuals with disabilities are twice as likely to be depressed and face stigma, discrimination, poverty, education and employment exclusion, as well as healthcare barriers. Some die up to 20 years earlier than those without disabilities.
Home Care Assistance is built on the belief that everyone deserves dignity, respect, and the ability to live comfortably in their own homes. Our highly trained care professionals can support comprehensive SIL through hourly or live-in home care. Connect with us to see which one can help you or your loved one.
The International Day of Persons with Disabilities is a reminder of the importance of inclusion and empowerment for all. By fostering an environment where individuals can live independently with the right level of support, SIL celebrates the abilities and potential of everyone.
